This is a one year project in collaboration with the West Midlands Cancer Intelligence Unit (the regional cancer registry) to improve the completeness of information on the ethnic group of cancer patients.

The main source of information on ethnicity is Hospital Episode Statistics (HES), but this only provides an ethnic group for about 60% of the patients known to the cancer registry.

This project will develop an electronic methodology to derive an ethnic group for cancer patients where is is not available from HES, and will allow the comparison of cancer incidence and survival rates for each of these groups.
